Mount Vernon, IL – The Mt. Vernon Police Department responded to reports of threats aimed at Mt. Vernon Township High School and a local middle school. The threats, circulating on social media, prompted an immediate investigation.

According to the police, the investigation revealed the threats were not credible. Other schools in the region received similar threats, but with different school names, suggesting a widespread hoax. School Resource Officers and the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office were quickly notified.

Although the threat lacked credibility, law enforcement agencies, including the Illinois State Police, will increase their presence at the schools. These efforts ensure staff and student safety while allowing schools to remain open.

Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely. Community members are urged to stay informed and report suspicious activities to local law enforcement.
