Snapchat Message Prompts Portage Police Investigation of School Violence Threat

Portage, IN – A Snapchat message regarding potential violence at Portage High School sparked a police investigation Monday night. The Portage Police Department, in collaboration with Portage Township Schools, immediately launched an investigation after being alerted.

According to the Portage Police Department, the message mentioned a student who reportedly overheard plans of violence at school. This student, a Portage High School attendee, was identified and interviewed along with their parent. As the message circulated, misinformation and speculation spread, causing concern throughout the community.

A second student mentioned in the message was also identified and contacted by law enforcement. Police have not found any credible threat, but continue to treat the investigation with full seriousness. All findings will be forwarded to the Porter County Prosecutor’s Office for review.

Two School Resource Officers are assigned to the high school, with one at each middle school. Extra officers will be present at the school today as a precautionary measure. The department will continue monitoring the situation and provide updates if any new information arises.
