Santa Fe, NM – An early morning officer-involved shooting in Santa Fe left one suspect dead after an encounter with a county deputy near an apartment complex.
According to New Mexico State Police, the incident began around 4:00 a.m. on April 18, 2026, when a Santa Fe County Sheriff’s deputy attempted to stop a motorcyclist for speeding near Agua Fria and San Felipe. The rider allegedly fled the traffic stop, later reappearing near the Vista Linda Apartments along Entrada Del Milagro.
Authorities said the suspect entered the apartment complex and attempted to evade deputies on foot after abandoning the motorcycle. The deputy pursued and eventually caught up, leading to a physical confrontation.
During the encounter, the suspect allegedly produced a firearm and fired at the deputy, missing him. According to state police, the deputy then returned fire, striking the suspect.
Additional deputies arrived and provided aid until emergency medical personnel reached the scene. Despite lifesaving efforts, the suspect was pronounced dead.
The individual was identified as 36-year-old Randall Brian Lopez. Investigators said the firearm in his possession had been reported stolen. Authorities also noted Lopez had a prior criminal history, including charges involving violent offenses and weapons violations.
The deputy was not struck by gunfire but was treated for burns to the face, consistent with muzzle flash exposure.
The New Mexico State Police Investigations Bureau is handling the case. Officials said the investigation remains active, and findings will be forwarded to the appropriate district attorney for review.
