Portage, MI – A late-night chimney fire drew a swift response from emergency crews in a Portage neighborhood, with flames visible from the street but contained before spreading to the rest of the home.

According to the Portage Department of Public Safety, crews were dispatched around 9:45 p.m. to the 3100 block of Kalarama Avenue. Upon arrival, firefighters observed active fire coming from the chimney of a residential property, prompting an immediate response to prevent extension into the structure.

Firefighters worked quickly to bring the situation under control, confining the fire to the chimney. Officials said the blaze was extinguished in approximately 15 minutes, minimizing damage and avoiding further risk to the home and surrounding properties.

The Texas Township Fire Department assisted at the scene, providing additional support during the response. Authorities confirmed that no injuries were reported among residents or emergency personnel.

Images released from the scene show ladder trucks extended to the roofline as crews worked under red emergency lights to address the fire. The home remained standing with no visible structural collapse, highlighting the effectiveness of the rapid response.

Chimney fires can occur when creosote buildup ignites, particularly during cooler months when fireplaces are in frequent use. Fire officials often recommend regular inspections and cleanings to reduce risk.

No additional details about the cause of the fire have been released.
