Rockingham County, NC – Three women face criminal charges after a coordinated search inside the Rockingham County Detention Facility uncovered alleged illegal narcotics and other contraband, authorities announced Friday.
According to the Rockingham County Sheriff’s Office, its Narcotics Division began investigating reports of illegal drugs inside the detention facility Thursday, Aug. 6.
Deputies from the Narcotics, Criminal Investigations and Detention divisions subsequently searched an inmate housing unit, including inmate cells and the inmates themselves. Authorities said multiple contraband items, including illegal narcotics, were seized.
Sabrina Marie Cobbler, 34, was charged with felony possession of cocaine and felony possession of a controlled substance on prison or jail premises. She received a $100,000 secured bond and an Aug. 17 court date, according to the Sheriff’s Office.
Lisa Marie Swain, 60, faces the same two felony charges. Authorities said she received a $50,000 secured bond and is also scheduled to appear in court Aug. 17.
A third woman, Ashley Rebecca Branch, 34, was charged with misdemeanor possession of a Schedule IV controlled substance and felony possession of a controlled substance on prison or jail premises.
The Sheriff’s Office did not specify in its announcement how the alleged drugs entered the detention facility or provide quantities for the narcotics seized.
Sheriff Billy Parker said illegal drugs and contraband would not be tolerated inside the jail and praised deputies from the three divisions for their work during the investigation.
Authorities said the investigation remains ongoing, leaving open the possibility of additional developments.
The charges are allegations. All defendants are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
