Jefferson County, IL – A suspect driving a stolen vehicle died Thursday evening after getting stuck on a road in Jefferson County.
The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of a stolen vehicle around 6:03 p.m. near Richview Road, just east of North Hart Lane. Deputies discovered that the suspect had taken the vehicle from a passerby who had stopped to help him after his vehicle became stuck.
A sheriff’s deputy located the stolen vehicle near the intersection of Richview Road and Grand Road. While attempting to take the suspect into custody, the suspect shot himself. Emergency responders pronounced him deceased at the scene.
Officers from the Mt. Vernon Police Department, Illinois State Police troopers, firefighters, and EMS personnel from Litton Ambulance assisted at the site.
Jefferson County Coroner Roger Hayse confirmed the suspect’s death.
The Illinois State Police is leading the investigation, focusing on the vehicle theft and the suspect’s death. Detectives from the sheriff’s office and Mt. Vernon Police are assisting with the case.
Authorities have not released the names of the suspect or the deputy involved, citing the need to notify family members and complete the investigation.
