Merrillville, IN – A large number of dogs and several cats have been removed from a Merrillville residence as police investigate a suspected animal hoarding case in Lake County.

According to the Merrillville Police Department, the investigation began after Humane Indiana contacted authorities with concerns about a possible animal hoarding situation at a residence in Merrillville.

Officers responded to the home and worked with the Lake County Sheriff’s Department Animal Control Division and Humane Indiana to assess conditions at the property and begin an investigation.

Police said the investigation resulted in a large number of dogs and several cats being removed from the residence. Authorities did not provide an exact number of animals involved.

The animals were placed in the custody of Humane Indiana, where police said they are receiving appropriate care and evaluation.

Authorities stressed that the case remains an active police investigation, limiting the information that can currently be released. Police did not announce any arrests or charges in connection with the investigation Thursday.

Because legal proceedings remain pending, the animals will stay in the legal and physical custody of Humane Indiana, an official partner agency of the Merrillville Police Department. Police said the animals cannot currently be transferred to rescue organizations, shelters, foster programs or private individuals.

The department thanked Humane Indiana and Lake County Animal Control for assisting with the operation and caring for the animals.

Police acknowledged significant public interest in the case and said additional information will be released when available and when doing so will not compromise the investigation.
