Redding, California — Thunderstorms are expected to return across interior Northern California this weekend, with the strongest storms Sunday afternoon capable of disrupting travel and outdoor activity.

Storms will begin developing around 1 p.m. Sunday near Redding, Chico, Sacramento and Truckee, spreading across the Sierra and into the northern Sacramento Valley through 10 p.m., where lightning and bursts of heavy rain could quickly reduce visibility on major routes including I-5 and I-80.

According to the National Weather Service in Sacramento, storm chances increase to 30% to 40% Sunday, with the most widespread and strongest activity expected during the afternoon and evening hours.

Heavy rain may pool quickly on roadways, especially in low-lying intersections and underpasses in Chico and Sacramento, while small hail up to 1 inch could create sudden slick conditions and minor vehicle damage. Gusty winds may also impact high-profile vehicles along exposed ճանապարհways near the Sierra foothills.

This is part of a broader system bringing instability and moisture into interior Northern California, fueling scattered but locally intense thunderstorms.

Outdoor areas, including hiking routes and open terrain near Redding and Truckee, will become hazardous as lightning develops rapidly.

Residents should move indoors when thunder is heard and avoid driving through heavy downpours where water collects on roads.

The greatest risk for severe storms and travel disruption will occur between 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. Sunday, when storm intensity peaks across the region.
