Kankakee County, IL – Authorities in rural Pembroke Township are continuing an investigation after 18 dogs were recovered during a late-night search tied to an alleged illegal dog-fighting operation, according to the Kankakee County Sheriff’s Office.

According to the sheriff’s office, deputies, Kankakee County Animal Control, and the Kankakee Area Metropolitan Enforcement Group (KAMEG) executed a search warrant shortly before midnight Friday, May 22, near 3000 South and 13700 East Road in Pembroke Township.

Investigators said Animal Control officers took possession of 18 dogs during the operation. Several of the animals were reportedly found in extremely poor health, and officers also seized evidence investigators said was consistent with dog-fighting activity.

Sheriff Mike Downey said the operation required extensive coordination between multiple agencies to safely secure the property and care for the animals.

“This investigation required extensive coordination between law enforcement personnel and Animal Control officials to safely execute the search warrant, secure the scene, and ensure these animals received immediate attention,” Downey said in a statement.

Authorities said no arrests have been made as of Saturday, but the investigation remains active and additional information could be developed as evidence review continues.

KAMEG Director Clayt Wolfe said investigators are focused on conducting a thorough investigation while assisting partner agencies involved in the case.

Animal Control officials said their immediate priority is ensuring the rescued dogs receive proper medical evaluations, treatment, and ongoing care.

Pembroke Township is located in southern Kankakee County, about 70 miles south of downtown Chicago.
