Cleveland, Ohio — Subfreezing temperatures are expected to damage plants and create hazardous early-morning conditions across northern Ohio overnight, with the coldest air arriving before sunrise Saturday.

Temperatures will fall to 30°F to 33°F between 2 a.m. and 8 a.m. Saturday in Cleveland, Akron, Canton, Youngstown and Mansfield, allowing frost and pockets of freezing conditions to develop on exposed surfaces.

According to the National Weather Service in Cleveland, frost and freeze alerts are in effect from 10 p.m. Friday through 9 a.m. Saturday, with the coldest readings expected inland away from Lake Erie where temperatures drop more quickly.

Cold air settling into low-lying areas and sheltered neighborhoods will intensify freeze impacts, especially in rural valleys south of Cleveland and near drainage areas outside Akron and Mansfield. This is part of a broader system bringing clear skies and light winds that promote rapid overnight cooling.

Sensitive plants and early-season crops may be killed within hours of exposure, while exposed outdoor plumbing faces a risk of freezing in colder inland spots.

Patchy frost may also form on bridges and untreated surfaces along I-90 and I-77, creating brief slick spots for early drivers, particularly in shaded and elevated sections.

Residents should cover plants, bring potted vegetation indoors, and protect exposed pipes ahead of the overnight cold.

The most damaging freeze conditions will occur between 2 a.m. and 8 a.m. Saturday, when temperatures drop to their lowest across the region.
