Boston, Massachusetts — Rain spreading into eastern Massachusetts late Saturday will create slick roads and reduced visibility overnight, impacting early Sunday travel across the Boston metro and surrounding cities.
Showers will transition to steadier light rain between 10 p.m. Saturday and 6 a.m. Sunday in Boston, Worcester, Providence and Lowell, where wet pavement and low visibility could slow traffic along I-93, I-95 and the Massachusetts Turnpike.
According to the National Weather Service in Boston, spotty showers Saturday evening will consolidate into a more uniform area of light rain overnight as an offshore system passes south of New England.
Rainfall amounts will remain light, but water may quickly coat road surfaces and collect in low-lying areas and underpasses, especially in urban corridors around downtown Boston and Providence, leading to slick driving conditions during the early morning hours.
This is part of a broader system bringing increasing cloud cover and moisture into southern New England before conditions improve from west to east Sunday afternoon.
Drivers should reduce speeds on wet roads and allow extra stopping distance during overnight and early morning travel.
The greatest impact to travel will occur between 10 p.m. Saturday and 6 a.m. Sunday, when steady light rain creates the most widespread slick conditions.
