Davenport, Iowa – Drivers along Interstate 80 and Interstate 74 have just hours to prepare as two rounds of strong to severe thunderstorms take aim at the Quad Cities on Friday, with the first wave arriving before the morning commute and a second round pushing through by evening.

According to the National Weather Service Quad Cities office, a Level 2 out of 5 severe weather risk covers eastern Iowa and northwest Illinois on Friday. Storms may develop in the morning, capable of producing lightning and hail, followed by a more organized round late Friday afternoon into Friday night. Forecasters warn that damaging wind gusts up to 60 mph and additional hail are possible with the stronger cells.

The morning activity could slow traffic along I-80 from Davenport to Iowa City and along I-74 through Moline and Bettendorf. Reduced visibility and ponding water may create slick stretches, especially near the Mississippi River crossings. The evening round poses a higher risk for stronger wind gusts that could down tree limbs and cause isolated power outages in Rock Island, East Moline and surrounding communities.

Emergency managers urge residents to secure outdoor furniture and plan alternate travel times if storms approach during peak commute hours. Charge devices and enable wireless emergency alerts before Friday afternoon.

Uncertainty remains in the exact timing of the evening storms, but impacts could escalate quickly once they develop. Additional watches or warnings may be issued with little notice as Friday unfolds.
