Pueblo, Colorado – Any spark along the Interstate 25 corridor could spread rapidly between 10 a.m. and 7 p.m. Thursday as powerful southwest winds and single-digit humidity grip southern Colorado.

According to the National Weather Service in Pueblo, a Fire Weather Watch remains in effect through Thursday evening for much of the I-25 corridor and adjacent plains. Southwest winds will increase to 20 to 30 mph, with gusts reaching 50 to 55 mph. Relative humidity could drop as low as 6 percent, creating explosive fire growth conditions if a blaze ignites.

The highest concern stretches from Colorado Springs south through Pueblo and Walsenburg, including communities near Canon City and La Junta along US-50. Crosswinds may make travel difficult for high-profile vehicles on I-25, especially in open areas south of Pueblo. Blowing dust could briefly reduce visibility on east-west roadways.

Emergency officials urge residents to avoid outdoor burning, welding, or any activity that could produce sparks. Secure trailer chains, properly discard cigarettes and delay yard work that involves power equipment. Fire crews remain on alert for rapid response, but containment could be difficult under these wind speeds.

Temperatures will climb well above seasonal averages Thursday afternoon, further drying grasses and brush. Conditions improve slightly after sunset as winds ease, but elevated fire danger may linger into the evening.

The Fire Weather Watch remains active until 7 p.m. Thursday, and upgrades to Red Flag Warnings are possible if winds strengthen further.
