Erie, Pa. – A severe thunderstorm watch is in effect for nine counties across northwestern Pennsylvania until 7 p.m. Friday, with damaging winds and hail posing risks from Erie to Clarion.
According to the National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center, the watch includes Beaver, Butler, Clarion, Crawford, Erie, Forest, Lawrence, Mercer, and Venango counties. The region could see wind gusts up to 60 mph and hail up to one inch in diameter as scattered storms intensify through the afternoon.
Localized power outages and tree damage are possible, especially along I-79 and Route 8, where high winds may impact visibility and travel. In Erie and Crawford counties, emergency managers recommend securing outdoor items and remaining indoors during storm activity. Residents in Butler and Lawrence counties should prepare for possible brief downpours and lightning through the early evening commute.
This is the first organized severe weather threat of May for the region, with storm cells expected to move quickly northeast. Drivers are urged to check road conditions and delay travel if thunderstorm warnings are issued later today.
The watch remains in effect until 7 p.m., but additional warnings could be issued as conditions evolve. Stay tuned to NOAA Weather Radio or local alerts for updates.
