Columbus, Ohio – Nearly 40 counties across Ohio are under a Severe Thunderstorm Watch until 7 p.m. Friday, as intense storms threaten damaging winds, large hail, and isolated power outages.
According to the National Weather Service’s Storm Prediction Center, the watch covers much of central, northeast, and southwest Ohio, including major population centers such as Columbus, Cleveland, Dayton, and Akron. The storms could produce wind gusts over 60 mph and hail up to an inch in diameter.
Counties under the watch include Cuyahoga, Franklin, Montgomery, and Summit, along with portions of the I-70 and I-71 corridors. The greatest risks are expected between 2 p.m. and 6 p.m., especially in urban areas where downed trees or utility lines could impact evening commutes.
Residents are urged to secure loose outdoor items, avoid unnecessary travel during heavy rain, and charge electronic devices in case of power interruptions. Local emergency management officials recommend monitoring NOAA Weather Radio or local news stations for updated warnings.
The Storm Prediction Center may issue additional advisories if conditions worsen. Thunderstorm activity is expected to taper off by late evening across most of Ohio.
