Gaylord, Michigan – Flooding is actively disrupting travel and forcing emergency shelter openings across Michigan, with multiple roads already closed and more impacts expected through tonight.

According to the Michigan Department of Transportation and state emergency management officials, water-over-road conditions, debris, and washouts have been reported statewide, particularly across northern and central Michigan. The state’s live disaster dashboard shows active closures and hazard zones stretching from Alpena and Cheboygan to Cadillac and Evart.

Communities including Mio, Grayling, Alpena, and Rogers City have opened 24-hour congregate care shelters to support displaced residents. Locations such as Tri Point Church of God in Mio, Alpena Township Hall, and Resurrection Life Center in Grayling are currently available, with additional support sites like the Salvation Army in Cadillac operating around the clock.

Travel remains hazardous, especially on rural routes where standing water and erosion have weakened roadbeds. Drivers are urged to avoid flooded roads and follow the “Turn Around, Don’t Drown” guidance, as water depth and current can be deceptive.

In Cheboygan County, multiple shelters including the Wolverine Senior Center and Knights of Columbus Hall are open, with accessible services available for residents in need.

Officials warn that conditions may continue to change rapidly as water levels shift. Additional closures and emergency resources could be announced through the evening.
