Pendleton, OR – Breezy winds are expected this afternoon along the eastern slopes of the Cascades and the Columbia Gorge. Coupled with dry conditions, these winds have prompted the NOAA NWS Storm Prediction Center to issue a fire weather alert, placing parts of eastern Oregon in the “elevated” risk category for fire outbreaks today.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS), sustained winds of 15 to 20 mph are expected, with relative humidity (RH) levels in the 20s. The risk is predicted to increase quickly after 5 p.m. due to a marine push associated with an incoming weather system. These dry and windy conditions could make the region more vulnerable to wildfires, particularly in areas where vegetation is already dry from recent weather patterns.

The alert emphasizes the need for local residents to remain vigilant and prepare for any potential fire hazards throughout the day and into the evening. Wind patterns are expected to shift as the week progresses, which may reduce the fire risk later in the week. However, continued dry conditions mean that the fire outlook remains a concern.

Residents are advised to avoid outdoor burning and be cautious of any activities that could spark a fire.
