Pendleton, Ore. – Wind gusts up to 45 mph could make travel hazardous along I-84, especially near Cabbage Hill, by late Friday afternoon as strong winds sweep across northeast Oregon and southeast Washington.

According to the National Weather Service in Pendleton, breezy to windy conditions will intensify Friday afternoon across the East Slopes of the Washington Cascades and the Blue Mountains. Gusts between 30 and 45 mph are likely in higher terrain, with a 70 to 90 percent probability of gusts exceeding 25 mph across exposed areas.

Drivers on I-84 between Pendleton and La Grande should prepare for sudden crosswinds, particularly in open stretches and elevated sections. High-profile vehicles, including semitrucks and RVs, face the greatest risk of being pushed off course. Winds may also impact travel along US-395 and OR-11, where open farmland allows gusts to accelerate.

Communities including Hermiston, Milton-Freewater and Walla Walla will experience sustained breezes through the evening hours. Blowing dust is possible in dry fields, briefly lowering visibility along rural highways.

Winds are expected to remain strong through 10 p.m. Friday before gradually easing overnight. Travelers should secure loose cargo, reduce speed in crosswind-prone areas and keep both hands on the wheel when navigating exposed roadways.

Additional advisories may be issued if gust potential increases across the Blue Mountain foothills later Friday.
