Amarillo, TX — A significant shift in the weather pattern is expected across the Texas Panhandle, bringing much-needed relief from the ongoing heatwave. Temperatures are set to drop sharply on Thursday and Friday, with highs falling 20 to 25 degrees below normal. Some areas could experience highs in the 60s on Friday, a stark contrast to the sweltering conditions earlier this week.
According to the National Weather Service in Amarillo, a cool front will sweep through the region starting Thursday, pushing cooler air into the Panhandle. Along with the cooler temperatures, storm chances are expected to increase, particularly late Friday into Saturday. The best chances for measurable rainfall will occur during the evening and overnight hours, with some storms potentially becoming efficient rain producers. These storms could lead to localized flooding, particularly in areas with slow-moving storm cells.
Friday’s storm activity is expected to peak with a 70-80% chance of at least half an inch of rain across the northern Panhandle. While the risk of severe storms is considered low, the possibility of flash flooding remains a concern due to the expected rainfall.
