Portland, Oregon – Travel across the Oregon Cascades could turn treacherous before sunrise Wednesday as heavy snow begins piling up at pass level by 4 a.m.
According to the National Weather Service in Portland, a Winter Weather Advisory is in effect from 4 a.m. Wednesday until 4 a.m. Thursday for the Cascades of Marion, Linn and Lane counties. Snow is expected above 4,000 feet, with total accumulations between 8 and 11 inches. The heaviest snowfall rates are likely from 4 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday, when moderate to heavy bursts could sharply reduce visibility.
Santiam Pass, Santiam Junction, Willamette Pass and McKenzie Pass face the greatest impacts. Tombstone Summit and areas near Waldo Lake and Breitenbush Springs will also see steady accumulation. Roads, especially bridges and exposed stretches, are expected to become slick quickly as snowfall intensifies during the morning hours.
ODOT may implement chain requirements with little notice. Drivers should carry tire chains, a shovel, blankets, water and non-perishable food. Checking TripCheck.com or calling 511 before departing is strongly advised.
Snow continues into early Thursday before tapering. Additional advisories may be issued if snowfall rates increase or snow levels shift.
