Omaha, Nebraska – Review your severe weather plan before sunset Thursday as strong thunderstorms may develop near the Interstate 80 and Interstate 29 corridors, bringing the threat of large hail and damaging wind into the overnight hours.

According to the National Weather Service in Omaha/Valley, confidence is increasing that at least isolated severe storms could form Thursday night, with another round possible Friday afternoon into the evening. The highest concern Thursday centers on hail, with stones potentially reaching 1 inch in diameter or larger. All severe hazards remain possible Friday, including wind gusts near 60 mph.

Storms Thursday are most likely after 7 p.m., initially developing west of the metro before tracking east across Douglas and Sarpy counties. Areas along I-80 from Lincoln to Omaha and north along I-29 toward Blair could see rapidly changing conditions. By Friday afternoon, renewed development may impact commuters along I-680 and Highway 75 during peak travel hours.

Drivers should prepare for sudden downpours, reduced visibility and brief ponding on roadways. Move vehicles into garages if possible to limit hail damage, and secure outdoor furniture before storms arrive. Those with outdoor plans Thursday night or Friday afternoon should identify sturdy shelter in advance.

Exact timing and storm placement remain uncertain, and not every community will see severe weather. Additional watches or warnings could be issued as conditions evolve. The threat should shift east late Friday night as the system exits eastern Nebraska.
