Cleveland, Ohio — Temperatures will drop into the lower 30s across northern Ohio overnight Saturday into early Sunday, with a freeze developing between 2 a.m. and 7 a.m. that could kill crops and create slick spots on elevated roadways in Cleveland, Akron, Canton, Mansfield and Youngstown.
According to the National Weather Service in Cleveland, the coldest temperatures will occur inland away from Lake Erie, where readings may fall to 30 to 32 degrees before sunrise, increasing the risk of widespread frost and localized freezing conditions.
This is part of a broader system bringing below-normal temperatures across the Great Lakes, allowing cold air to settle overnight under clear skies and light winds.
Frost will form quickly on exposed surfaces, especially in low-lying areas and rural valleys near Mansfield and Marion, where cold air pools. Bridges and overpasses along I-90 and I-77 may develop thin frost, reducing traction during the early morning hours.
Sensitive vegetation is at high risk of damage after several hours below freezing, while outdoor plumbing and pets may also be affected by the cold.
Drivers should slow on bridges and shaded roads early Sunday, and residents should bring plants indoors or cover them to prevent damage.
The most critical freeze window will occur between 3 a.m. and 6 a.m. Sunday, when temperatures bottom out near or below freezing across northern Ohio.
