Michigan City, IN – Drivers traveling along Interstate 94 in northwest Indiana should prepare for overnight lane closures and a major traffic pattern change beginning next week in Porter and LaPorte counties.
According to INDOT Northwest, alternating lane closures are scheduled for eastbound I-94 between mile markers 29 and 34, located east of State Road 49 and west of U.S. 421. The overnight closures are expected to begin on or after Tuesday, May 26, from 9 p.m. until 5 a.m.
Transportation officials said the closures are necessary to shift traffic into a new construction configuration tied to ongoing resurfacing operations along the interstate corridor.
Once the new setup is in place, eastbound traffic will temporarily utilize counterflow lanes on the westbound side of I-94 near mile marker 29. Eastbound vehicles will then transition back onto the normal eastbound side near mile marker 34 before reaching U.S. 421.
Westbound traffic will remain shifted to the right lane and shoulder during the project.
INDOT said the temporary traffic configuration is expected to remain in place through late June while crews continue resurfacing work along the interstate.
Motorists traveling between Michigan City, Porter County, and nearby Lake Michigan communities should expect changing traffic patterns, reduced speeds, and potential overnight delays.
Officials also noted the schedule remains weather dependent and could change if conditions worsen.
Drivers are encouraged to slow down in construction zones and remain alert for workers and shifting lane alignments.
