Grand Junction, CO – Wind gusts up to 60 mph are sweeping across Colorado’s northwest high country, driving heavy snow and blowing drifts that could shut down travel above 9,000 feet before nightfall.

According to the National Weather Service in Grand Junction, a Winter Storm Warning remains in effect for the Elkhead and Park Mountains until 9 p.m. MST Wednesday. An additional 4 inches of snow is expected at higher elevations, with strong winds creating areas of blowing snow and sharply reduced visibility.

Communities near Columbine, Hahns Peak and Toponas will see the worst conditions in exposed terrain. Snow-packed and slushy roads are likely to turn icy after sunset as temperatures drop. Mountain passes and secondary roads in Routt County could become difficult to navigate, especially during the evening hours.

Drivers heading into the high country should delay non-essential travel if possible. If travel is unavoidable, carry extra food, water, warm clothing and a flashlight in case road closures or slide-offs leave motorists stranded. Check Colorado 511 for the latest road conditions before departure.

The warning remains in place until 9 p.m., and additional advisories may follow if snow bands persist into the overnight hours.
