Mancelona, Michigan – Water levels below the Bellaire Dam are rising quickly, putting low-lying areas in Antrim County at risk for flash flooding through Friday morning.

According to the National Weather Service in Gaylord, a Flash Flood Watch remains in effect for areas downstream of the dam along the Intermediate River, including communities near Mancelona. Increased outflow from the structure could push water into flood-prone zones, especially in poor drainage areas and near riverbanks.

Local emergency officials and dam safety experts are closely monitoring conditions. Any sudden increase in discharge could lead to rapid flooding with little warning, particularly in low spots, rural crossings, and small access roads near the river. Urban areas with limited drainage may also see standing water develop quickly.

Drivers are urged to avoid flooded roadways and never attempt to cross water-covered bridges or culverts. Residents living near the river should prepare for possible quick action, including moving valuables to higher ground and staying alert for warnings.

This situation remains fluid, with updates expected as conditions evolve. Additional alerts or warnings could be issued at any time through Friday morning as monitoring continues.
