Gary, IN – A 42-year-old woman from northern Indiana was shot and killed Friday evening near a McDonald’s on 5th Avenue. The Gary Police Department responded to a disturbance call around 8 p.m. at the fast food location.
Officers arrived and learned the individuals involved in the disturbance had fled on foot. While officers were on scene, they heard gunfire near Lincoln Street. Multiple shots were fired, and officers took cover behind a nearby apartment building.
A red vehicle, unrelated to the shooting, was seen heading east on 5th Avenue. The female driver sustained a gunshot wound and crashed into a tree near McDonald’s. Despite efforts by the Gary Fire Department, the woman was pronounced dead at the scene.
Authorities identified the victim as a 42-year-old from Gary. The Lake County Prosecutor’s Homicide Task Force and CSI were called to assist in the ongoing investigation. The Lake County Coroner was also requested at the scene.
