South Bend, Indiana – Two waves of thunderstorms will move across northern Indiana today, with a more dangerous round arriving after 8 p.m. that could bring damaging winds, heavy rain, and a tornado risk overnight.
According to the National Weather Service in Northern Indiana, the first round of storms will develop between 2 p.m. and 7 p.m., remaining mostly below severe limits but still capable of producing heavy rain and slick roads. A second, stronger line is expected between 8 p.m. and 2 a.m., with the potential for damaging wind gusts, localized flooding, and isolated tornadoes.
Cities including South Bend, Elkhart, Fort Wayne, and Warsaw will see impacts through the evening and overnight hours. Major routes such as I-80/90, I-69, and U.S. 30 may experience reduced visibility and standing water, especially during heavier downpours late tonight.
Residents should secure outdoor items before evening storms, charge devices, and ensure multiple ways to receive alerts overnight. Avoid travel during peak storm timing if possible, and never drive through flooded roadways.
Storm intensity and exact timing will become clearer this afternoon. Additional warnings are likely tonight as conditions evolve, with updates expected within hours.
