Michigan City, Indiana – Waves on Lake Michigan are set to surge up to 4 feet tonight, creating dangerous swimming conditions across southern Berrien County, Michigan and La Porte County, Indiana beaches. Beachgoers are strongly urged to stay out of the water, as hazardous rip currents and structural currents will pose serious risks through Monday, July 7th.

According to the US National Weather Service Northern Indiana, a combination of 10 to 20 mph north winds and building waves will make swimming especially hazardous tonight into Monday. The high swim risk is greatest at beaches in southern Berrien County, MI and La Porte County, IN—particularly near the north side of piers along Lake Michigan.

Officials warn that strong currents could quickly sweep swimmers away from shore. Those planning a visit should heed all lifeguard warnings and avoid entering the lake. High waves and swift water can also impact boaters, kayakers, and anyone near the waterline.

Travelers and residents are advised to stay off the beaches, supervise children closely, and avoid walking on piers. Similar high-risk beach conditions have led to emergency rescues in previous summers along the southern Lake Michigan shoreline.

Hazardous conditions are expected to persist through Monday evening. More advisories may be issued if winds or waves increase.
