Chicago, Illinois – Swimmers heading to Lake Michigan beaches Monday should be on high alert, as a high swim risk remains in effect throughout the day due to dangerous waves and strong currents.
According to the National Weather Service in Chicago, a swim risk advisory is active for Lake Michigan beaches, especially near Chicago and northwest Indiana. Hazardous conditions are expected to persist into Monday evening, driven by gusty winds and elevated wave activity. Officials urge beachgoers to stay out of the water and obey posted warnings, particularly in areas like Oak Street Beach, 31st Street Beach, and Indiana Dunes.
Temperatures across northern Illinois will remain seasonally warm, with highs ranging from 80 to 84°F on Monday and climbing slightly through Thursday. While most of the region will stay dry, isolated storms are possible south of I-80 Sunday night and again midweek, with a 20–30% chance of showers Tuesday through Thursday. Conditions near the lakefront will be slightly cooler than inland locations.
Those heading outdoors should stay hydrated and monitor local alerts. Swimmers should avoid entering the water where flags or signage indicate hazardous conditions.
Typical summer weather continues this week, but the high swim risk at Lake Michigan beaches remains the most immediate threat. Additional updates will be issued if conditions worsen.
