Fort Wayne, Indiana – A prolonged hard freeze will settle across northern Indiana and surrounding states overnight, with temperatures dropping low enough to damage crops, impact plumbing, and create slick travel conditions into late Monday morning.
According to the National Weather Service in Northern Indiana, a Freeze Warning is in effect from midnight through 11 a.m. Monday across northern Indiana, southwest Michigan, and northwest Ohio. A Frost Advisory remains in place through 9 a.m. Sunday morning, with temperatures already near freezing producing widespread frost.
The coldest conditions are expected inland, where lows could reach 25 degrees in areas including Fort Wayne, Warsaw, and Marion. Cities such as South Bend, Elkhart, and Lima are expected to fall into the upper 20s. Major corridors including I-69, I-80/90, US-30, and I-75 may develop frost on bridges and overpasses before sunrise Monday, increasing the risk of slick spots during the commute.
Agriculture and home infrastructure face the greatest risk, especially with the extended duration of freezing temperatures lasting into late morning. Residents should cover or bring in sensitive plants, shut off outdoor water lines, and insulate exposed pipes. Drivers should slow down on elevated roadways where surfaces cool fastest.
Temperatures will climb above freezing after 11 a.m. Monday, ending the immediate threat. Additional cold alerts may be issued if similar overnight conditions persist.
