Raleigh, North Carolina – Drivers across central North Carolina could encounter water-covered roads and reduced visibility through early Saturday afternoon as periods of rain move across the region, with brief downpours capable of producing localized flooding in low-lying and urban areas.
According to the National Weather Service in Raleigh, widespread rain will continue through early Saturday afternoon, with a few isolated thunderstorms possible across southeastern portions of the forecast area. Rain chances will gradually decrease from west to east during the mid- to late afternoon as conditions begin to improve.
The wet weather will keep temperatures well below late-July averages, with afternoon highs ranging from the mid-70s to lower 80s. Communities including Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill, Greensboro, Goldsboro, Fayetteville, Rocky Mount, Henderson and Pinehurst can expect cloudy skies for much of the day before gradual clearing develops later.
Brief heavier showers may overwhelm storm drains, leading to ponding on roads, especially in cities and areas with poor drainage. Motorists should slow down during heavy rain, allow extra stopping distance and never drive through flooded roadways. Residents should also remain alert for isolated lightning in southeastern North Carolina where a few thunderstorms could develop.
Rain will taper from west to east through the afternoon, allowing improving travel conditions by evening. While widespread severe weather is not expected, the National Weather Service advises remaining aware of changing conditions until the rain fully exits the region. Additional statements could be issued if localized flooding becomes more widespread.
