Asheville, NC – A winter storm will bring snow, ice, and gusty winds to parts of North Carolina and northeast Georgia starting early Wednesday, creating hazardous travel conditions.

According to the National Weather Service in Greenville-Spartanburg, a Winter Weather Advisory is in effect from 6 a.m. Wednesday until noon Thursday. The advisory covers the North Carolina mountains, foothills, and Piedmont, as well as Rabun County in Georgia.

Snowfall totals will vary, with most lower elevations seeing less than an inch, while higher ridges could receive 1 to 3 inches. Ice accumulation is expected to be light but may create slick roads and bridges, especially late Wednesday into early Thursday. Wind gusts up to 40 mph could also cause isolated power outages due to falling tree limbs.

Travel may be dangerous, particularly during the Wednesday morning and evening commutes. Officials advise drivers to slow down, use caution, and check road conditions by calling 511.

This system will exit by midday Thursday, but lingering icy spots may persist into the morning hours.
