Syracuse, NY – Residents across Central New York are waking up to saturated ground and soggy conditions Tuesday after a system of heavy overnight rain moved through the region. The highest rainfall amounts were concentrated in the Finger Lakes, where some communities saw more than two inches of precipitation, creating potential for high water on local roadways.

According to the National Weather Service in Binghamton, the 24-hour rainfall measurements ending at 8 a.m. Tuesday confirmed the significant accumulations. A location near Auburn in Cayuga County recorded 2.21 inches, while the Syracuse area saw totals ranging from 1.82 to 2.11 inches. The data was compiled from a mix of automated weather stations and volunteer reports.

Other cities across the state also saw notable rainfall, with Ithaca receiving 1.17 inches and Elmira measuring 1.76 inches. The downpours were less intense further south and east. Binghamton proper recorded only 0.17 inches, while Utica saw 1.11 inches. In neighboring Pennsylvania, Scranton received just 0.25 inches.

While the widespread, heavy rain from this event has ended, the ground remains thoroughly soaked. Commuters should remain cautious of ponding on roads and watch for high water in low-lying areas throughout the day. No widespread flood warnings are currently in effect.
