STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — A true American hero, PFC Vincent Speranza, breathed his last on August 2, 2023, at the remarkable age of 98.

Born to Italian immigrants in Port Richmond on March 23, 1925, Speranza’s life was a testament to bravery and sacrifice. Enlisting in the US Army at the age of 18, he served valiantly in Company H, 501st Parachute Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division during World War II, particularly during the Battle of the Bulge.

Speranza had an impressive collection of military awards and honors, including two Purple Hearts, a Bronze Star for Valor, a Presidential Unit Citation with Oak Leaf Cluster and Legion of Honour, to name a few.

Returning home, Speranza became a history teacher at Curtis High School and even authored the book “Nuts!” chronicling his experiences. Despite his age, he yearned for one last parachute jump, a cherished tradition he began at 80. However, age restrictions limited him to a tandem skydive, which he gladly embraced last March.

With numerous accolades and a legacy of courage, Staten Island bids farewell to this remarkable soldier, whose spirit will live on in the hearts of many. Rest in peace, Vince Speranza. #WWII #AmericanHero
