Albuquerque, NM – A winter storm warning will go into effect at 11 p.m. Friday for Johnson and Bartlett Mesas, Union County, and Raton Pass. Snowfall is expected to total 3 to 6 inches by Saturday night.

According to the National Weather Service, the storm will last until 11 p.m. Saturday. The highest snowfall is likely in the Raton Pass area and on the Johnson and Bartlett Mesas. Drivers should avoid U.S. 87 between Clayton and Raton and Interstate 25 through Raton Pass, as roads will become slick and hazardous.

The storm will also bring bitterly cold temperatures. Exposure to the cold increases the risk of hypothermia and frostbite. Officials urge residents to stay indoors when possible. Those venturing outside should dress in multiple layers and cover exposed skin. Hats, gloves, and scarves are essential for retaining body heat.

The New Mexico Department of Transportation advises slowing down if travel is necessary. Drivers should keep extra supplies, such as blankets, water, and food, in their vehicles. Updated road conditions can be accessed by calling 511 or visiting nmroads.com.

This winter storm marks the first major snowfall event of the season for the region. Residents should prepare for potential disruptions and prioritize safety. Snowfall may taper off late Saturday, but icy roads could linger into Sunday morning.

Be prepared for delays and plan ahead. Weather updates will continue throughout the weekend to ensure the safety of those in affected areas.
