Central Illinois – Frigid temperatures, biting wind chills, and snow will impact Central Illinois beginning Saturday morning, prompting safety concerns for residents and travelers. The National Weather Service (NWS) warns of temperatures plummeting to the single digits and wind chills dipping as low as -15°F by Sunday.
According to the NWS, light rain may mix with snow early Saturday, creating slippery roads, especially along I-55 and other major highways. The coldest conditions will arrive Sunday through Tuesday, with gusty winds and blustery conditions. Overnight lows will hover between -7°F and 3°F, with daytime highs struggling to reach double digits.
Drivers should exercise caution as patchy freezing fog and rain tonight could result in slick surfaces. Authorities advise checking road conditions before traveling and preparing vehicles for extreme cold. For outdoor plans this weekend, layer up and avoid prolonged exposure to reduce the risk of frostbite.
The extended forecast shows continued cold for MLK Day on Monday, with temperatures around 11°F and sunny skies offering little reprieve from the chill. Tuesday will see similar conditions, with daytime highs near 8°F. The extreme cold is expected to ease slightly by midweek, with highs in the low 20s by Wednesday.
Residents are urged to stay updated on weather alerts and ensure proper heating at home. Pet owners should bring animals indoors and check on vulnerable neighbors.
