Albuquerque, N.M. – Severe storms are expected to intensify across eastern New Mexico this afternoon, posing a growing threat of large hail, damaging winds, and flash flooding—especially in areas near recent burn scars. Storm activity will expand westward by Monday afternoon, increasing risks through Tuesday evening.

According to the National Weather Service in Albuquerque, a Slight Risk of severe storms exists today (Sunday) from 2 p.m. to midnight, primarily affecting eastern NM along the Texas border. On Monday, storm chances increase across central and eastern counties between noon and 9 p.m., with marginal risk stretching toward the Continental Divide.

High-impact zones include communities near the Hermits Peak/Calf Canyon and South Fork burn scars, where runoff could trigger urban flash flooding. The threat will be especially elevated Tuesday, with “very high” flood risk in the Ruidoso burn scar region.

Drivers should avoid arroyos, low-lying roads, and unpaved routes during storms. Stay indoors during thunder, have multiple warning sources ready, and consider pre-charging devices in case of outages. Winds could gust SE 10–20 mph today and slow early next week.

Warnings remain in effect through Tuesday, with additional alerts likely as conditions evolve.
