Birmingham, Alabama – Two waves of potentially dangerous storms are expected to impact Central Alabama today, bringing threats of isolated tornadoes, large hail, and damaging wind gusts up to 60 mph.
According to the National Weather Service in Birmingham, the first round of storms began early Sunday morning and is expected to continue through late morning. A second, stronger round of scattered thunderstorms is forecast for this afternoon and evening. While the tornado threat remains low, the storms could still produce rotating cells capable of brief tornado touchdowns.
Cities including Birmingham, Tuscaloosa, Clanton, and Montgomery fall under a Level 2 (Slight) Risk, with impacts most likely between 8 a.m. and 7 p.m. Residents are urged to remain weather-aware, especially along I-65 and I-20 corridors. Quarter-size hail and falling branches from gusty winds may also disrupt power or damage vehicles.
To stay safe, make sure you have multiple ways to receive warnings, know your shelter location, and check for updates throughout the day.
Storm activity is expected to taper off late Sunday night, but more advisories could be issued if conditions intensify.
