Albuquerque, NM – New Mexico State Police arrested two individuals after a reported high-speed race on Interstate 40. Officers observed two cars traveling westbound at speeds exceeding 120 mph early Monday morning.
According to New Mexico State Police, the incident began around 1:15 a.m. Officers saw the vehicles allegedly racing recklessly through Albuquerque. The Albuquerque Police Department’s helicopter unit, Air 2, tracked a 2015 Dodge passenger vehicle to Moriarty, where it stopped at a gas station. When another officer spotted the vehicle, the chase resumed.
The Edgewood Police Department stopped the vehicle after deploying spike strips. After a second set of strips, the vehicle rear-ended a semi-truck and became disabled. The driver, Jaymin Giron, 20, and passenger, Eva Montoya, 18, were arrested without further incident.
Giron faces charges of aggravated DWI, aggravated fleeing, and resisting an officer. Montoya was charged with resisting evading an officer. Both were booked at the Metropolitan Detention Center.
