Las Cruces, NM – A two-vehicle crash on Interstate 25 near mile post 5 in Las Cruces claimed one life and left several injured on Monday. Around 6:40 p.m., New Mexico State Police responded to the scene where a Hyundai SUV collided with a Dona Ana County Sheriff’s Deputy vehicle.
Police reported that a 57-year-old woman was driving a 2022 Hyundai SUV north on I-25 when she attempted a sudden U-turn in the median. Her SUV turned into the path of a southbound sheriff’s vehicle, which was traveling with lights and sirens activated. The deputy’s vehicle rear-ended the Hyundai, leading to severe injuries.
A 67-year-old passenger in the Hyundai, identified as Ismael Misquez, sustained critical injuries and was later pronounced dead at an area hospital. The Hyundai’s driver was also transported to a hospital, but her condition remains unknown.
Two sheriff’s deputies in the second vehicle suffered injuries and were treated at a nearby hospital. All individuals involved were reportedly wearing seatbelts at the time of the crash.
