La Porte, IN – A cross-county vehicle pursuit took a dramatic turn Thursday when an SUV left the road and became partially submerged before deputies rescued the fleeing driver after he went underwater, authorities said.
According to the La Porte County Sheriff’s Office, deputies encountered a GMC driven by 26-year-old Jacob A. Gilmore on Thursday, Aug. 6. Authorities said Gilmore was wanted on an arrest warrant for invasion of privacy and domestic battery.
A deputy attempted a traffic stop near U.S. 20 and County Line Road after observing an alleged traffic violation. Police said the GMC initially stopped before suddenly accelerating south on County Line Road, triggering a pursuit.
The sheriff’s office said the chase traveled through Coolspring, New Durham, Scipio, Clinton, Cass and Dewey townships before Gilmore allegedly turned onto Horseshoe Bend Road, also known as Millers Lane. The SUV then left the roadway and became partially submerged.
Deputies said Gilmore allegedly refused commands, lit a glass pipe and began smoking before leaving the SUV and swimming away. He eventually went underwater and did not resurface, authorities said.
Three deputies entered the water. Deputy Austin Wells located Gilmore, brought him to the surface and swam him back to shore. Medical aid was immediately provided, and Gilmore regained consciousness, according to the sheriff’s office.
Authorities allege Gilmore attempted to flee again on foot before being taken into custody and transported for treatment.
Gilmore faces multiple charges, including resisting law enforcement, escape, possession of cocaine or a narcotic drug, criminal recklessness, aggressive driving and operating while intoxicated. He also remained wanted on the previous warrant.
The charges are allegations. Gilmore is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
