Hastings, Nebraska — Dry and mild conditions will keep travel impacts minimal across south-central Nebraska through the weekend, but a shift to stormy weather begins Monday afternoon as thunderstorms develop between 4 p.m. and 10 p.m. in Hastings, Grand Island, Kearney, Holdrege and York.

According to the National Weather Service in Hastings, temperatures will climb from the upper 60s and 70s this weekend into the mid-70s to low 80s Monday, providing the warmth needed for scattered showers and storms to form late in the day.

This is part of a broader system transitioning the central Plains from a quiet, dry pattern into a more active setup with increasing moisture and instability early in the week.

Storms Monday evening may produce brief heavy downpours capable of quickly pooling water on low-lying roads, underpasses and rural drainage areas, especially along US-281 and nearby highways. Reduced visibility and slick pavement could slow the evening commute, particularly in Grand Island and Hastings where traffic concentrates.

Drivers should slow during heavy rain and avoid water-covered roadways, while residents should monitor forecasts for changing storm conditions.

The most immediate impact window will occur between 5 p.m. and 9 p.m. Monday, when storms are most likely to intensify and disrupt travel.
