Nebraska – Warm, breezy air is quickly giving way to a sharp temperature drop that could freeze crops and pipes within hours across central Nebraska and northern Kansas. Winds are already shifting, and colder air is rushing in behind a strong front.
According to the National Weather Service in Hastings, a Freeze Watch remains in effect through Saturday morning, with temperatures expected to fall as low as 22°F across the region. Gusty north winds reaching 40 to 45 mph earlier are helping drive in the colder air mass.
Hastings and surrounding communities, including Grand Island, Kearney, and Holdrege, will see temperatures fall rapidly through the evening. By early Saturday morning, widespread frost and freezing conditions are likely. Sensitive vegetation faces a high risk of damage or loss if left unprotected.
Plan now to cover plants, bring potted vegetation indoors, and protect outdoor plumbing. Even small amounts of standing water could freeze, creating slick patches on rural roads and bridges during early travel.
Saturday recovers with sunshine and highs near the upper 50s, but the cold start will linger in shaded areas. Another chilly night follows, though temperatures begin moderating by Sunday with highs climbing into the 70s.
Looking ahead, a warming trend takes hold early next week, with highs reaching near 80°F Monday and mid-80s by Tuesday under sunny skies.
Additional advisories may be issued as temperatures fluctuate. Are you taking steps to protect plants or noticing the temperature drop yet?
