Hastings, NE – Bitterly cold weather will grip south-central Nebraska this week, with overnight temperatures dropping into the single digits below zero. Wind chills as low as -15°F and patchy freezing fog are expected to create hazardous conditions Tuesday night into Wednesday morning. Residents are urged to take precautions to protect themselves and their vehicles.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Hastings, northwest winds will increase overnight, creating wind chill values between -10°F and -15°F. Patchy freezing fog may reduce visibility for drivers, particularly on rural roads. Motorists are encouraged to exercise caution and allow extra travel time.

Wednesday will bring slightly warmer conditions, with highs reaching 26°F under sunny skies. However, wind chill values could still dip below zero during the morning hours. By Thursday, temperatures are forecast to climb to 35°F, offering some relief from the cold snap.

Looking ahead, the extended forecast suggests a gradual warming trend, with highs in the upper 20s to mid-30s through the weekend. While Thursday night may see a slight chance of snow, the majority of the week is expected to remain dry but cold.

Residents are reminded to wear layers, limit outdoor exposure, and ensure pets are adequately sheltered. Drivers should check road conditions on major routes, including U.S. Highway 6, before heading out, as freezing fog could linger in the early hours.
