Everett, Washington – A suspicious substance discovery prompted the evacuation of two major county government buildings in Everett Friday.

According to the Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office, the Admin East and Admin West buildings on the Snohomish County campus at 3000 Rockefeller Avenue were evacuated after a substance was discovered inside a ballot box located in a basement area. The evacuation was ordered out of an abundance of caution.

The Everett Fire Department, along with law enforcement bomb technicians and detectives, responded to the scene to investigate and identify the substance. Officials said both buildings were fully evacuated while crews conducted safety assessments.

Authorities have not released details about the nature of the substance, and there is no current estimate for when the buildings will reopen. Updates will be provided as more information becomes available, officials said.

As part of the response, Oakes Avenue was closed between Pacific Avenue and Wall Street, affecting traffic near the county campus. Drivers were advised to avoid the area while the investigation remains active.

No injuries were reported, and officials did not immediately indicate whether any arrests had been made or whether the incident is believed to be intentional. The investigation remains ongoing.

The Snohomish County campus houses multiple administrative offices, and the evacuation may impact county employees, residents with scheduled appointments, and commuters traveling through downtown Everett during the closure period.

Officials emphasized that safety protocols were followed and that the response involved multiple agencies to ensure the scene was secured properly.
