Nashville, TN – A 22-year-old man from Nashville was arrested after hitting a Metro Nashville Police Department (MNPD) patrol car early Tuesday. Carlos Esquivel reportedly evaded a traffic stop, speeding away on I-24 West around 1:30 a.m. and performing dangerous stunts.
MNPD Central Precinct Officer Joe Medina initially attempted to stop Esquivel on Korean Veterans Boulevard, but the driver fled. According to police reports, Esquivel accelerated onto I-24, maneuvering recklessly and performing donuts before speeding head-on into Officer Medina’s car near the entrance ramp.
Officer Medina activated his vehicle’s emergency equipment and attempted to stop Esquivel, but Esquivel continued driving erratically. He then drove toward Medina’s car, striking it directly before fleeing the scene.
Following the collision, detectives quickly identified Esquivel through the vehicle’s license plate. He later surrendered and now faces multiple charges, including aggravated assault on an officer, felony evading arrest, reckless driving, and leaving the scene of an accident.
Officer Medina sustained minor injuries, received treatment, and was later released from the hospital. Esquivel remains in custody on a $27,500 bond.
