Oakland County, Mich. – Sept. 13, 2024 – A mysterious unmanned boat was found circling Michigan’s Elizabeth Lake Thursday night, prompting a swift search effort. Oakland County Sheriff’s deputies responded after receiving a 911 call around 8:30 p.m. about the abandoned vessel spinning in the middle of the lake.
According to officials, the boat appeared unoccupied, with floating clothing and shoes nearby. Fearing a possible drowning, the sheriff’s Search and Rescue Team deployed boats, drones, and a helicopter to search the area.
Deputies traced the boat’s registration to a 35-year-old Waterford Township man, who revealed that he and his 24-year-old passenger had been thrown overboard. Both had swum safely to shore after hitting a wake. Neither wore life jackets.
The sheriff’s office continues to investigate, noting alcohol as a contributing factor. Sheriff Michael Bouchard emphasized the importance of wearing safety gear, warning that the incident could have easily been fatal.
