Billings, Montana – A sharp weather shift will impact Montana by midweek, with rain quickly transitioning to snow and creating slick travel conditions by early Friday.
According to the National Weather Service in Billings, a widespread system will move in Wednesday afternoon, bringing steady precipitation through Friday. Snow levels are expected to drop from around 7,000 feet Wednesday to near 3,500 feet by late Thursday, allowing snow to reach lower elevations, including areas near Billings.
Across south-central Montana, including Livingston, Red Lodge, and Sheridan, there is a 50% to 80% chance of at least a quarter inch of precipitation, with higher terrain seeing the best chance for 3 inches or more of snow. Mountain areas could pick up heavier totals, while lower elevations may see a rain-to-snow mix that leads to slushy roads and reduced visibility during the Friday morning commute.
Ranchers and rural communities should prepare for cold, wet conditions that may impact young livestock. Drivers should plan for changing road conditions, especially overnight Thursday into Friday.
The system begins late Wednesday and continues through Friday, with additional advisories possible as colder air settles into the region.
