Springfield, MO – Scattered showers and thunderstorms are expected to return to much of southwest Missouri over the next two days, with the highest chances for rainfall focused along and south of the Interstate 44 corridor.

According to the National Weather Service in Springfield, scattered afternoon and evening showers and thunderstorms are expected Wednesday and Thursday, with the greatest coverage anticipated in communities along and south of I-44, including areas near Springfield, Branson, Joplin, Lebanon, and surrounding portions of the Ozarks.

Forecasters say rainfall amounts will vary significantly depending on where storms develop. While most locations are expected to receive less than 1 inch of rain, isolated areas could pick up 1 to 2 inches under heavier thunderstorms.

Despite the return of storms, the National Weather Service said severe weather is not expected at this time. However, any thunderstorm can produce brief heavy rain, gusty winds, frequent lightning, and reduced visibility for motorists.

The greatest storm activity is expected during the afternoon and evening hours, a common pattern during the summer months as daytime heating fuels thunderstorm development.

Residents with outdoor plans should remain weather-aware and monitor updated forecasts, especially if traveling along the I-44 corridor or attending outdoor events. Keeping a rain jacket or umbrella nearby and having a way to receive weather updates is recommended.

While widespread flooding is not anticipated, localized heavier downpours could temporarily create ponding on roads and reduce visibility during periods of intense rainfall.

The National Weather Service encourages residents to check the latest forecast before heading out and to seek shelter immediately if thunderstorms approach.
