Kansas City, MO – A more active weather pattern will move into Missouri late this week, with a growing risk of severe thunderstorms from Thursday into Friday morning.

According to the National Weather Service in Kansas City, the strongest storms are expected Thursday afternoon and evening, April 17, and may continue into early Friday, April 18. Forecast models show the potential for large hail and damaging winds as primary threats. Portions of northern and eastern Missouri, including Kansas City, St. Joseph, Columbia, Kirksville, and Hannibal, are within a 15-29% probability range for severe weather, with localized areas seeing up to 30%.

Thursday’s threat is centered in northwestern and north-central Missouri, with Friday’s risk shifting southeast to cities like Jefferson City, Mexico, and Quincy, IL. The NWS recommends closely monitoring alerts and preparing for quick changes in conditions, especially for those traveling or participating in outdoor activities.

Residents are urged to secure loose outdoor items, charge electronic devices, and ensure emergency kits are accessible. While tornado threats remain low, frequent lightning, hail up to 1 inch, and wind gusts over 60 mph are possible.

Updates and detailed alerts will be issued as conditions evolve throughout the week.
